When you begin at level 1, every Rune feels meaningful, and each scavenged piece of gear becomes a story. Leveling is cheap, which means you can pivot into any build without the guilt of wasted attribute points. Sure, a Godrick Soldier might swat you like a fly at first, but oh, the satisfaction when you finally yank his boots off his corpse. With the right early-game focus, that naked fool becomes a force of nature.

First Keepsake: Let the Golden Seed Sprout

Before even setting foot in Limgrave, the character creation screen asks what memento you carry. The Golden Seed is the undisputed champion for a Wretch. Once you find your first Site of Grace (and you will, trembling, after that scripted death by the Grafted Scion), open the flask menu and use that Seed immediately. More healing charges mean more mistakes allowed—and you will make plenty. Initially, set all flasks to Crimson Tears; sorcery and incantations can wait until you actually own a staff or seal.

Strip the Soldiers, Literally

The path from the Church of Elleh into the woods is your first hunting ground. Follow the golden guidance eastward and you’ll spot half a dozen soldiers ambling around like they own the place. They don’t. A surprise bonk from your club followed by a swift retreat—rinse and repeat—and soon those soldiers will be dropping pieces of their Godrick armor, swords, and shields. Even a single gauntlet or pair of boots dramatically reduces incoming damage. And let’s be honest, walking around in stolen knight trousers feels like the ultimate underdog triumph. Gather those Runes; the combined haul will push you to level 2 the moment you unlock the ability to level up.

Unlock the Power: Stormgate Grace

After clearing the woods, the terrain opens into a plain. Do not, under any circumstance, charge the heavily guarded encampment straight ahead. The Wretch has the durability of wet parchment right now. Instead, hug the cliff wall to the left and keep moving until you touch the Stormgate Site of Grace. A cutscene grants you the ability to level up—and the world changes. Spend every single Rune immediately. Don’t hoard, don’t hesitate. Your journey from zero to hero officially begins.

Vigor Is Your Best Friend

It cannot be stressed enough: pump Vigor first. Every point adds precious HP, and because you started at level 1 with dirt-cheap leveling costs, you can quickly climb to 20 Vigor before even touching other attributes. That extra health turns one-shots into two-shots, and two-shots into survivable duels. Find a weapon you enjoy later—the Lordsworn’s Straight Sword, the Claymore, or even a basic spear—and only then invest in Strength or Dexterity to meet its requirements. Stats like Intelligence, Faith, and Arcane will whisper seductive promises, but resist them until your foundation is solid.

Limgrave: Your Personal Loot Box

Limgrave stretches before you like a smorgasbord of opportunities. Roll in the dirt with the undead on the beaches, sneak past the giant crabs near the Agheel Lake, and poke your club into every ruin. If the soldiers have been stingy with their wardrobe, visit Kalé at the Church of Elleh. He sells chainmail armor, a couple of shields, and a few weapons to get you started. Oh, and don’t forget your very good boys—make your way to the Mistwood Ruins and listen for the howling. A certain spectral steed and the finger snap gesture will introduce you to one of the most loyal allies in the Lands Between. Early exploration also reveals that many Sites of Grace are tucked behind cliffs, caves, and sneaky patrols—touch them liberally to build a safety net of respawn points.

By the time you defeat your first major boss, the Wretch will have morphed into whatever you dreamed it would be. It might swing colossal swords, fling lightning bolts, or bleed enemies dry with twin daggers. The beauty is that no stat point was wasted. You started with nothing, and through grit, foolish bravery, and a thoroughly ransacked landscape, you crafted a legend.
